In Character Information
character name: RanFan
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Timeline: Near-end anime when she shows back up to kick the snot out of some peeps with her badass new automail
character's age: 16
powers, skills, pets and equipment: UHM. RANFAN IS THE MOST BADASS PERSON EVER.
No really.
Power wise, RanFan is capable of a lot of different powers. She's an extremely skilled fighter--having been taught the best by her Grandfather. She has the ability to read her enemy's movements to determine what will be coming next. Coupled with her speed, her ability to fight makes for a lethal combination. Not only all that, but she has been known to switch her fighting style to something that works if one style is failing her.
She's been shown to have a little bit of explosives experience, once blowing Edward's arm completely off. >D Mean.
One of her most prized abilities is the power to sense and see the energies of the Homunculus in canon. It's like sensing several souls; and since the Philosopher's Stones are made of human souls, it's nearly overwhelming to sense. Regardless, RanFan's strength will allow her to overcome this.
She also has a super badass automail arm. With spikes and a sweet long blade. Bring it on.
Possession wise, she'll be coming with everything on her person. Mask, ninja outfit, bombs, blades, kunai--y'know. The arsenal to be expected of a protector of the Xingese prince.
canon history:
Not much is known about RanFan’s childhood. Only that she is very well trained in the Xingese Martial Arts and became a bodyguard at a very young age, presumably 15. She is immensely skilled in combat—specifically the Xingese Martial Arts, and use of Grenades. She belongs to a family that serves directly under the Yao clan. This is why she was selected to become one of Ling’s body guards—along with her skill set.
RanFan is one of two bodyguards to Ling Yao, 12th Prince of Xing, the other being her Grandfather, Fuu. Before meeting up with the Elric brothers, RanFan crossed the Xerxes dessert with Ling and Fuu to arrive in Amestris, where they are currently seeking the secret to immortality—The Philosopher’s Stone. This stone has the power to bypass the laws of not only alchemy, but life itself. It can be used without a sacrifice, thus, imperative to immortality.
They quickly learned that they were not the only ones in contention to find this miracle stone. Their search (and desperate hunger) led them to the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse. Over a large (and very expensive) meal, Ling learned of the brothers’ efforts to find the stone, and could not get the needed information out of them himself. This caused him to call in his bodyguards.
RanFan, using her exceptional combat skills, fought with the Elric brothers, who believed her to be male at this point in time. During this instance, Edward began badmouthing her Prince, causing her moves to become more wild. Insults to the Prince’s name are not tolerated by RanFan, and this inevitably led to her defeat. RanFan lost her mask to Edward’s alchemy, and demanded it back, not wanting the Prince to see her face.
RanFan, with Fuu, tailed the Prince to Central City. After Fuu is dispatched to escort Maria Ross to Xerxes, RanFan stays behind to guard the Prince. After defending their safe house from Barry the Chopper, RanFan senses an ominous source of twenty or more souls clustered into one spot. She goes to investigate, surprising Envy with an attack, as he was disguised. She manages to kill him in several different forms. Unfortunately, he regenerates. A lot. At this time, Ling shows up and she informs him that these creatures (the homunculus) seem to be incapable of death, and may be the key to immortality.
Ling and RanFan team up with Edward and Alphonse in an attempt to capture a homunculus. They had all but captured Gluttony when Wrath shows up. During an intense battle with the homunculus, Wrath ends up inflicting a major injury to RanFan’s left arm. Ling springs into action to protect his bodyguard. RanFan uses her grenades to give the two a chance to escape. Unfortunately, they realize they are being tracked due to the exuberant amount of blood loss. RanFan takes a kunai to her useless arm and cuts it off, claiming that several things can be sacrificed for duty. They tie the recently severed limb to a dog and are able to make their escape.
RanFan is taken to Dr. Knox’s cottage, where she is bandaged up. It is at this moment in the plot that Ling and Edward are swallowed up into the False Gate that is Envy. RanFan protested leaving Ling behind, but was in too weak of a condition to really put up a fight. Once she had been moved, RanFan deeply grieves over the loss of her arm, but is determined to replace the missing limb with automail.
When Fuu returns he both slaps and completely berates RanFan for failing to protect Ling, though he begins shedding tears over his granddaughter’s injury. The two depart as soon as RanFan is well enough to move, presumably to Rush Valley to get automail, as they did not want to endanger Pinako and Winry.
When RanFan reappears, she has been outfitted with an automail arm. It has been outfitted with spikes around the knuckles and wrist area and a long blade protruding from the elbow, which she uses to thoroughly beat the crap out of Gluttony with.
We go without seeing RanFan until about the end of the manga. When she shows up to fight alongside Greed/Ling and kicks some serious homunculus/entire country's army butt. It is in this battle that Fuu, her grandfather, sacrifices himself to take out Wrath. It will be just after his passing that she enters Anatole.
personality:
First and foremost, RanFan is extremely loyal to the Yao clan—especially to Ling. This faithfulness to the clan, paired with her undying devotion, is a very big asset for the warrior. She does not like anyone insulting Ling, and doing so will send her into a blind rage.
She is also very quick-tempered, though her Grandfather tells her she should be more calm. These fits of rage can cause her to make mistakes in combat, much like she did in the fight with Edward. Later on, she seems to be able to control this rage enough to succeed in battle. Her scorn is one not to be trifled with, considering she has many sharp pointy objects with which to kick butt.
RanFan tends to remain almost androgynous in her daily life, wearing the traditional Xingese warrior outfit. She also makes quite a big scene about the Prince seeing her face. This has not been touched on, but it is believed it stems from great affection for Ling. She does not wear makeup, does not seem to spend time on her looks, and mostly focuses on training and keeping the Prince safe.
Her devotion to Ling in particular is almost similar to an unrequited love, and evidence supports that she might have feelings for him. (i.e.: enraged at anyone insulting his name, the devotion to protecting him, sacrifices given…etc.) She puts her duty first, however, and remains loyally his protector. She seems to have a good relationship with her grandfather, Fuu. It is assumed that he was her teacher as a child. This may be why they work so well together. They maintain professionalism before family ties.
Though she seems to become flustered easily, RanFan has a very intimidating presence. Almost cold, it can shake those with weaker wills. … Or maybe it’s the mask. Who knows?
She will take business seriously in every situation. Especially when it involves Ling. It is her sworn duty to protect him, and she will until the very end. RanFan is more than willing to take a hit for the team (Losing her arm is not enough) and remains a constant presence throughout the series.
Though she is mostly business, she's shown her feminine and innocent side a few times. Just an example, when she believes she blew up Edward, she fears that Ling may be mad at her for it and makes... the most adorable face. She does know contentedness, though it's masked when others are near.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
She's RanFan, man. She'll definitely be a fighter, and a major MAJOR asset to the team in terms on scouting, info retrieval, and all around badassery. RanFan's sensing ability will definitely come in handy; though I understand it will take her time to begin using it again.
This will be an interesting setting to explore her character alone, as she attempts to survive and search for her Prince. Iiii like it. C:
Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:
[The problem with not being familiar with... weird technology is. Well... Accidents happen! Such as this event, wherein RanFan has accidentally pressed tooooo many buttons and is now recording herself.]
[This is ridiculous. She shouldn’t be here! She should have been in Central, nearly back to the Prince, where she should be protecting him! Not in the hustle and bustle of this strange city! Remaining stealthily quiet, RanFan slips a small blade from her sleeve.]
Where is he…?
[What to do, what to do! Her senses weren't working, her automail ached with the sense of new air... This was not home, and this... RanFan was on the defense.]
... This is silly; I need to locate the Prince. By any means necessary.
Third Person Sample:
This wasn’t normal. Not by any account. This place was not Amestris. It was not Xing. It wasn’t even her world anymore from what she could tell. There was no terrifying presence under the earth. The air smelled different from normal. The signs were all there. On the good side of things, the warrior felt other souls. At least there were people.
Of course, waking up in a strange room in some unknown city... that... that was a pretty good hint in of itself...
Yet one more odd thing… that strange device she found in her room when she woke. She had turned it over in her hand a few times. Her automail hand must have bumped a side button, as it startled her when it lit up. Taking it as a clue, the thing, whatever it was, had been tucked into one of the pouches around her waist. To be investigated in depth later...
RanFan had more immediate things to worry about than some weird device she turned up with. Most importantly being the location of the Prince. She’d been looking for him before—now the situation was much more desperate. Landing in some foreign world… There was no way he wasn’t in trouble already, if she knew him. … And following him around for years had taught her much about the Prince.
… Like that he could be crafty. Here she was. Trained in the Xingese Martial Arts. Able to track and sense souls. And that man could give her the slip, given the correct situation. It was something she had learned to combat against. How hard could it possibly be after the numerous times it had happened before…?
Dark eyes travelled down to her new limb. Hmph. With this, she could protect him. Never again would he wind up endangering his own life. Even though it was made with a dulled metal, it still glinted with a silver shine. It could move and function. Not… particularly well, but it was functional in the least. She’d been rushing her recovery. Probably a bad idea in retrospect, but… It was necessary.
Regardless of these issues, she had a duty to fulfill. RanFan needed to find the Prince. Now where to begin…
Anything else? I did also apply for Trisha Elric, and wanted to drop a note that I don't think the two have a high chance of interacting. I don't think playercest will be a problem c:
